Chapter Ten
At Jon’s direction, Maureen stopped by his office several days later.
“I’m going out of town on business for a month.”
She hadn’t thought of Sophie much in days since the Symphony concert, but she did now.
“What does that mean for me?”
“It means you can try to find her at Black Doors.”
“Black Doors? It’s real?”
“Of sorts. Let’s just say it’s an unusual place.” He handed her a card with an address. “You’ll want to arrive about ten.”
“And Sophie’s there,” she was suddenly more than excited with news of her friend.
“I can’t say that for sure, but they might know where she is if she’s not.”
She was totally baffled. “And why don’t you know where I can find her?”
“And why would I? She was a model that posed for me—and rather well. But personally, she’s not my type.”
“I thought she’d be every man’s type.”
“Hardly. I knew she’d appeal to some, so I nurtured the shoots with Scoffield. It was not my intention to ever introduce her to more, except that she was so wanting—and now, apparently has slipped behind the black doors like she’s always belonged there. That still doesn’t mean that I have any personal interest in what happens to her.”
“But you know I have,” she was getting angry.
He smiled condescendingly. “Yes, and I have a personal interest in you.”
This alarmed her. “You do?”
“Of course. For your sake, I hope you find your friend; but it really doesn’t matter to me. Women slip through the cracks all the time. I can’t be concerned if they never appear again.”
“How could you be so cold?” she blared with a rising passion that was taking lethal jabs at his icy face.
“It comes naturally,” he replied.
Any affection for Jon Rush that might have developed in the last few days, meager that it was, died that moment.
“It’s the black door in your mind that I’m most interested in opening,” he added with a decided sneer.
She wanted to spit in his face, but he held the only card she had to Sophie in his hand, and she couldn’t risk him tossing it aside with another of her spiteful remarks. He was a man to take away as easily as he’d give. “Perhaps you think you need a crowbar to get inside me,” she managed to say.
“No, actually, you’re opening rather effortlessly.”
“You know, I really don’t want to be your project,” she said.
“Yes, I know that. And that doesn’t really matter to me. As long as you’re looking for Sophie, then I have you.”
“And what if I find her there?” she said glancing at the card.
“You don’t think I’d give her to you that easily,” he said. “Trust me, it will take more than one visit to get to her. Wherever she is, she’s being carefully kept.”
Carefully kept. These words were strangely seductive.
“When you’re there, tell Mandy I sent you and follow her lead. It’s hard work; but eventually it should be worth your time.”
“Hard work?”
“You’ll be working the floor. It’s the only way they’ll let you in.”
She fingered the card, snapping it with her thumb and then thrust it in the pocket of her skirt.
